Turning 60: A Privilege and a Journey
Someone recently asked me what it’s like to be nearly 60, and I couldn’t help but reply, “It’s absolutely amazing!” and as I approach this milestone, I feel so incredibly fortunate. Turning 60 is a gift — a privilege many don’t get to experience. Not everyone is blessed with the opportunity to grow older, and I never take that for granted.

For me, turning 60 feels like an exciting milestone that brings with it a sense of peace and gratitude. My husband and I are blessed with two amazing daughters, and I’ve been lucky enough to build a long and fulfilling career. Along the way, I've been fortunate to embark on so many incredible adventures. But what truly makes this chapter of my life special are the wonderful people I’ve met, who have shared in the journey with me.
Here are some of the highlights of being 60:
1. Staying Active, But Slowing Down
I still enjoy many of the same activities I loved in my younger years, but with a more mindful approach. Growing up as a figure skater, I spent hours on the ice — often pushing myself to the limit. I’ll admit, I was a bit of a daredevil back then! Today, I still skate, but I’m much more cautious and aware of my body’s needs. The rush of skating is still there, but now it’s paired with a slower, more reflective pace. What hasn’t changed is the sheer joy I get from skating and connecting with others who share the same passion.
2. Embracing New Career Paths
My career is taking on a new and exciting direction. I’ve transitioned into more leadership and advisory roles in post-secondary education, which has been incredibly rewarding. But I’ve also stepped into an entirely new role — as a supply educator in a child care centre. Working with young children and their families has been such a heartwarming experience, and I can honestly say it brings me so much joy to be part of their lives. The opportunity to make a difference, even in small ways, feels truly fulfilling.
3. Never Stop Learning
I’ve always been a lifelong learner, and that hasn’t changed one bit. In fact, I’m now studying college-level early childhood education — a perfect complement to my new role as a supply educator. It’s a true privilege to be able to apply what I’m learning in the classroom to the real world and vice versa. The challenge of translating theory into practice has kept my mind sharp and eager to grow.
4. More Time for Leisure
As much as I enjoy staying active, I’ve also found a new love for life’s simpler pleasures. Whether it’s skating, walking with my neighbour, or attending art workshops, I’m making time for things that bring me joy. Gardening has become a special passion, and I can’t wait to get back into it in the spring. There’s something so soothing about nurturing a garden and watching it bloom, just like my own growth over the years.
5. The Gift of Wisdom
At 60, I feel like I’ve accumulated a wealth of wisdom. I’ve had my share of exhilarating adventures — and my fair share of struggles. But every experience, both the highs and the lows, has shaped me into the person I am today. I no longer take anything for granted. Instead, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the life I’ve lived and the wonderful people I’ve met along the way.
Age is just a number, after all. I’ve worked hard to keep my spirit young and my body healthy, and I think I’m doing a pretty good job of it. Each day is a chance to embrace life, set new goals, and continue this beautiful journey.
